Matera is the oldest city in Italy, at over 9,000 years old! Located in the region of Basilicata, it still holds Puglian roots, and was once considered part of the Puglia region. The old city was carved from the limestone, and people lived in the primitive Sassi area until the 1950s. Now, the Sassi has been reimagined as a tourist area, with cave hotels, restaurants, shops, and more.

Stay at Fra i Sassi Residence to experience staying in a cave hotel. The hotel boasts beautiful views of the Sassi, and includes a varied breakfast and evening apertivo.

Take a sunset tour of the Murgia park for incredible views as the lights come on in the historic city. Explore the caves where there is evidence of human activity predating the city.

Wind your way through the stairways and alleys of the Sassi, finding your way to Piazza Vittorio Venetta, the gateway between the old and new city.
