First Prayer of the Continental Congress, 1774

"O Lord our Heavenly Father, high and mighty King of kings, and Lord of lords, who dost from thy throne behold all the dwellers on earth and reignest with power supreme and uncontrolled over all the Kingdoms, Empires and Governments; look down in mercy, we beseech Thee, on these our American States, who have fled to Thee from the rod of the oppressor and thrown themselves on Thy gracious protection, desiring to be henceforth dependent only on Thee. To Thee have they appealed for the righteousness of their cause; to Thee do they now look up for that countenance and support, which Thou alone canst give. Take them, therefore, Heavenly Father, under Thy nurturing care; give them wisdom in Council and valor in the field; defeat the malicious designs of our cruel adversaries; convince them of the unrighteousness of their Cause and if they persist in their sanguinary purposes, of own unerring justice, sounding in their hearts, constrain them to drop the weapons of war from their unnerved hands in the day of battle!

Be Thou present, O God of wisdom, and direct the councils of this honorable assembly; enable them to settle things on the best and surest foundation. That the scene of blood may be speedily closed; that order, harmony and peace may be effectually restored, and truth and justice, religion and piety, prevail and flourish amongst the people. Preserve the health of their bodies and vigor of their minds; shower down on them and the millions they here represent, such temporal blessings as Thou seest expedient for them in this world and crown them with everlasting glory in the world to come. All this we ask in the name and through the merits of Jesus Christ, Thy Son and our Savior.
Amen."

I say "legacy" a lot in my work. I know it can start to sound like a buzzword after a while.

So let me actually tell you what I mean by it.

It's not the venue. It's not the florals. It's not even the ceremony itself, as beautiful as that moment is.

Legacy is the 90 people who got on a plane for someone they love. It's the grandmother in the front row who watched her grandchild become who they are. It's a couple looking at their guest list and saying "we want our wedding to honor our families, our histories, and celebrate bringing it all together into our new family."

That thread, the one that connects the people who shaped you to the people who will witness whatever comes next, is the whole reason any of this matters.

When I work with couples, this is what I'm actually thinking about. Not just the details of the day. The reason the gathering matters in the first place.

Who shaped you. What sacrifices got you here. What the people in that room deserve to feel when they watch you become a new family.

That's why I built the Legacy Wedding Blueprint the way I did. Before a single venue or vendor conversation, I want couples to understand exactly what they're honoring.

Because once you know that, the wedding stops being an event you're managing and starts being a statement about who you are and where you came from.

That's what I mean when I say legacy.

The Legacy Wedding Blueprint is three parts.

This has nothing to do with wedding planning, but it’s a good reminder- letting another parent know that their kids are awesome might just make their day.

Also, I do not recommend playing a drinking game where you do a shot every time I say the word “awesome”…. You will be dead. 😂

Let me say something that goes against most wedding planning advice you'll find online.

"It's your day, your way. Tune out the noise."

I understand why that advice exists. When you're in the middle of hundreds of decisions and everyone around you has an opinion, the idea of just shutting it all out sounds like relief...

But I've watched enough couples navigate this to know that tuning out family input entirely isn't actually the goal. And it often creates more problems than it solves.

Here's what I've actually seen work.

The couples who handle family input best aren't the ones who draw the hardest lines. They're the ones who have a framework for receiving input with genuine grace while staying anchored to their own vision as a couple.

Because here's the truth about most family input during wedding planning: it usually comes from love. Your mother suggesting a different floral arrangement isn't trying to hijack your wedding. She's trying to contribute to something that matters to her deeply. Your future father-in-law pushing for a longer guest list isn't trying to be difficult. He's carrying a real sense of obligation to the people who have been part of your partner's life.

When you understand the love behind the input, the response becomes easier.
Something like: "We really appreciate how much you care about our wedding. We want to honor everyone's perspective while staying true to what feels right for us as a couple."

That one sentence does a lot of work. It acknowledges the heart behind the input. It doesn't invite a committee, and it keeps you and your partner operating as a team rather than getting pulled in different directions.

Part 3 of the Legacy Wedding Blueprint walks through several of these scripts (for budget conversations, guest list tensions, tradition negotiations, and overwhelming input of every variety). Not because family input is something to manage. But because having language ready means you can stay present and gracious in the moment instead of reactive.

Your family loves you. Your wedding should honor that. And it can, without compromising your vision.

Before you book a single vendor or tour a single venue, I want you to try something!
Finish this sentence together:

"Our wedding will honor _____ while celebrating _____. The most important elements of our day will be _____, _____, and _____ because these reflect who we truly are as a couple."

If you can fill in every blank with conviction, not with what you think you should say, but with what is genuinely true for the two of you, you are more prepared than most couples who have already been planning for six months.

If you can't fill it in yet, that's not a problem. That's information.

It means you haven't done the foundation work yet. And the foundation work is the part that makes everything else easier.

When you know what your wedding is honoring, venue selection becomes more focused.

When you know what matters most to both of you, the vendor conversations have direction.

When you have a vision statement you can actually stand behind, every family opinion has a filter and every budget decision has a priority order.

This isn't about having a perfect answer. It's about having an honest one.

The Vision Statement in the Legacy Wedding Blueprint isn't a generic fill-in-the-blank. It's built from your own answers to a series of reflection exercises. Your family foundation, your shared values, your priorities as a couple. By the time you reach your Vision Statement, you've already done the work that makes it meaningful.

That's the difference between planning a wedding and building a celebration.

A Three-Part Journey to Understanding Your Wedding Vision

There's one question in the Legacy Wedding Blueprint that I didn't expect to hit the way it did.

It asks: "What would you want your grandparents to know about how their choices affected your life?"

For me it was my parents, not my grandparents. But the question stopped me.

Because most of us have probably never actually thought about it that deeply. We've never actually put words to what someone's sacrifice, or presence (or lack of), or example meant to the way our life turned out.

I sat with it for a while before I could answer it.

That's the thing about this exercise. It's not really about the wedding. It's about understanding what the wedding is actually for (what it's honoring, who shaped the people standing at the altar, and what those people deserve to feel on that day).

When couples do this workbook together they stop planning a wedding and start understanding what the celebration is meant to be. And the celebrations that come out of that work feel different. Not just beautiful. Theirs.

This is one piece of Part 1 of the Legacy Wedding Blueprint. It's complimentary, it's three parts, and it's the starting point I wish every couple had before the planning began.

I want to tell you about something I didn't expect to happen when I tested my own Legacy Wedding Blueprint.
My husband and I sat down together and went through all three parts. I built the workbook, so I assumed I knew what our answers would be. I thought I knew how he thinks, how he processes decisions, what he values.

I had MOST of it right, ha!

The planning temperament section is what got me. I'm an Action-Oriented Leader (no surprise there). I make decisions quickly, I want to move forward so we can tackle the next thing, and sitting in indecision longer than necessary is genuinely uncomfortable for me.

My husband, is a Thoughtful Planner. He loves to deep dive into research on a new topic. Videos, blogs, and yes, multiple Excel spreadsheets. It makes sense because that's what he does in his work. He needs time to process and wants all the information before he commits to anything.

And guess what? Those two combinations create friction. Not because either approach is wrong, obviously, but because without a framework for understanding each other's process, the Action-Oriented Leader starts to feel like the Thoughtful Planner is stalling. And the Thoughtful Planner starts to feel pressured into decisions they're not ready to make.

The Blueprint gives you a communication strategy built specifically for your combination (even if you match!). It tells you how to give your partner the space they need to process in their own way, before the tension starts. It reminds you how your fiancee thinks before the conversation becomes an argument about a vendor when it's really about feeling unheard.

We've been married long enough that we navigate this pretty naturally now. But I kept thinking about what it would have meant to have that framework when we were planning our own wedding.

It was also interesting because Jeffrey was one question away from being an Action-Oriented Leader too. Which honestly explains a lot about how we work. Sometimes his "researching phase" goes out the window, especially if he knows the subject well already, and we are both efficient and flexible enough to find the solution to the situation we put ourselves in.

If you're newly engaged and already sensing that you and your partner approach decisions differently, then the Legacy Wedding Blueprint is where I'd start because the temperament quiz is only a portion of the insight it provides.

It's three parts and it's complimentary.
