You don’t realize how much POWER goes into this until you see it up close. 🪓

Another event from the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show in Ketchikan, this time from the ground. No chainsaw. Just an axe, a massive log, and a whole lot of strength, precision, and stamina.

Every swing has to hit exactly where it needs to, and watching these guys chop their way through a log this size is seriously impressive.

Would you even make it halfway through? 😂

POV: You thought the lumberjack show was just going to be a little cheesy… 😂🪵

Then you watch two lumberjacks run on a spinning log with their feet, and suddenly you’re completely invested. 🤣

It’s fast, ridiculous, entertaining… and you KNOW someone’s going in the water. 🌊😂

👉 Definitely a fun choice if you’re on an Alaska cruise and looking for something entertaining to do in town!

And yes… wait for the ending. 👀💦

How FAST can you climb a 60-foot pole with basically just a rope and spikes on your boots? 😳

This was one of the craziest events at the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show in Ketchikan. Both of these guys absolutely flew up the poles, but watch the climber on the left — he was insanely fast getting to the top and somehow even faster coming back down.

It’s one of those things that looks impressive on video, but seeing it live makes you realize just how much skill, strength, and nerve this takes. Definitely not something I’d want to try. 😂

If you’re visiting Ketchikan and have an hour to spare, this show is a really fun stop.

If you’re visiting Ketchikan and don’t have an excursion planned, the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show is a pretty fun way to spend an hour. 🪓

These guys turn old-school logging skills into a full-on competition, with axe throwing, log rolling, chopping and some seriously impressive displays of strength and balance.

It’s right in town, easy to get to from the cruise ships, and makes for a great little stop while you’re exploring Ketchikan.

We grabbed a bunch of video, so this is just the first of a few reels from the show.

“How close can we get?” was pretty much the question as our captain eased the boat right up toward Wedding Cake Falls in Endicott Arm.

What looked impressive from a distance got absolutely massive the closer we got. The sound of the water, the spray, the cliffs surrounding us… it was one of those moments where the video still doesn’t really show the scale.

Definitely one of the coolest stops on our way through Endicott Arm.

Thousands of salmon. All heading the same direction. 🐟

Walking along the water in Ketchikan, we couldn’t believe how many salmon were making their way upstream. Literally THOUSANDS of them, with fish constantly launching themselves out of the water as they pushed toward their spawning grounds.

Some of those jumps help salmon navigate shallow water, rocks and rapids, but scientists say salmon also jump in open water for reasons that still aren’t completely understood. It could be agitation, hormonal changes or even an attempt to knock parasites loose.

Whatever the reason, standing there watching this massive salmon run happen right in front of us was one of those Alaska experiences we definitely weren’t expecting.

Watching the salmon fight their way upstream in Ketchikan was one of those things we didn’t expect to be so fascinating.

You could literally sit there and watch them launch themselves into the current, get pushed backward, regroup, and try again. Over and over. The amount of energy it takes just to move a few feet upstream is incredible.

And the crazy part? This is exactly what they’re built to do. Salmon return from the ocean and battle their way back toward the freshwater streams where they were born to spawn, sometimes traveling hundreds of miles and overcoming rapids, waterfalls, and obstacles along the way.

Seeing that struggle up close gives you a whole different appreciation for just how remarkable these fish are.

Definitely one of the coolest stops we made in Ketchikan.
