Sorting through a recent Recycle Station collection and taking these hard-to-recycle items to ! ♻️

While these items don’t belong in our curbside recycle bins, James Recycling partners with specialty third-party recyclers to make sure they get properly processed.

Quick note on the single-use plastic utensils and straws: items labeled “compostable” are unfortunately greenwashed garbage, so just trash those. But all these other sorted plastics—like 5/PP and 6/PS and non-compostable straws and utensils—can be recycled right through this local resource!

Is it curbside, specialty, or straight into the trash? 🗑️

Let’s play everyone’s favorite household guessing game!

Sorting your empties can sometimes feel like solving a Rubik’s cube blindfolded, but getting it right keeps our local stream clean and keeps non-curbside items out of the wrong bin. From supplement bottles (bigger than 2”x2” with the cap screwed on tight!) to paperboard egg cartons and takeout trays, knowing before you throw makes all the difference.

We are bringing something kinda fishy to Rhone Street this Halloween… and it’s sure to o-fish-ally be a most goofy trick-or-treating spot around! 🐟🎃

What is a Halloween Fish Market you wonder? Google it! You’ll come across the Dodge Ave Fish Market that a group has done for a few years now, and it just looked like so much fun that we decided we have to try it here too! 🎣✨

Think Pike Place Market meets spooky season silliness—no scares or jumps, just pure, wholesome, laughable fun for all! Bring those little ghouls, goblins, and guppies by to show off their costumes and “order up” their favorite Halloween treats. 🍬

♻️ Master Recycler Approved Treats: AND since we are the home of our neighborhood community recycle station, we’re keeping sustainability in mind! All the candy we hand out will either be wrapped in easily recyclable materials (like foil and cardboard) or served as unwrapped bulk candy bagged fresh to order for each child! (And don’t worry—safety is a top priority, we hold official Food Handler certifications!) 📦🍫🧼

🌧️ Rain or shine: We’ll be set up in our driveway under a canopy!

So wonderful to place these adorable “Leave Them Be” zines (created by local artist Sharotonin Native Plant Stuff) into our local Little Free Libraries for folks to discover.

Celebrating 2 years of the Rhone Street Recycle Station! 🎉

To mark this milestone, I’ve given the station a little update and posted a refreshed version of the 5-step process to make recycling these hard-to-recycle items as easy as possible.

Whether you’re a regular contributor or new to the station, here is a quick recap of how things work:
• Step 1 - Sign Up & Follow: Make sure you’re signed up for the monthly e-newsletter and if you can give us a follow at .
• Step 2 - Clean & Dry: All items must be dry, and 100% free of food residue and debris.
• Step 3 - Sort Into Correct Bins: Note that bins have shifted locations, and we now accept shredded paper (bagged in paper bags) for local processing!
• Step 4 - Payment: Specialty recycling requires a small fee ($3 per grocery bag) to cover depot costs. For several items you can instead opt to visit a free public RecycleOn center.
• Step 5 - No Curbside Items: Reminder on Portland’s shape and size rules for curbside recycling (no tubs, jugs, bottles or buckets that are 2x2 inches or larger).

POV: When you know “clean and dry” isn’t a suggestion—it’s the golden rule of recycling. 🧼✨

Wet or food-soiled items are contaminants, so we built a mini clothesline right over our kitchen sink and set up an extra dish rack just to give our recyclables a dedicated place to drip-dry.

Taking a moment to rinse and air-dry items—including plastic film, multi-layer plastics, and rigid containers—helps ensure they actually get processed and recycled.
