66 years ago today, history was made right here in Stafford County 🏛️📜

On September 1, 1960, five courageous students from the all-Black H.H. Poole High School (housed inside the Rowser Building) took a monumental step toward justice by walking up to attempt to desegregate the all-White Stafford High School (now Drew Middle School).

While their initial attempt was turned away on a technicality, their bravery laid the vital groundwork for the successful integration of Stafford County Public Schools just one year later at Stafford Elementary School (now the Alvin York Bandy Administrative Complex).

Lois Vines Cunningham, one of those five brave students, visited the Rowser Building to view the Path to Freedom African-American Mural. Seeing her stand alongside her own history is a powerful reminder of the living legacy right here in our backyard.

Originally built in 1939 as the Stafford Training School after local Black families pooled their own resources to purchase the land, this site represents decades of community resilience, sacrifice, and leadership.

Today, this wall stands inside as a permanent tribute to the educators, families, and students like Cunningham who fought for educational equality in our community.

📍 The Rowser Building | 1739 Richmond Hwy, Stafford, VA
🎟️ Listed on the National Register of Historic Places & featured on the Stafford African American Heritage Trail.
