A THOUSAND MILES HOME FOR THE FULL MOON | THE 80s GENERATION: MILK CANS, SPINNING LANTERNS & MEMORIES THAT NEVER FADE 🌕✨
The 80s generation grew up in a time of change, and the Mid-Autumn Festival came with two special kinds of joy: making a toy of your own, and eagerly waiting for the day Mom would bring home your very first star-shaped lantern or spinning lantern.
On the nights leading up to the Full Moon, all it took was hearing your friends calling from outside the alley to drop the bowl of rice you were still eating and rush out into the street.
Some days, Mom would make you stay and finish dinner first. You had to eat two full bowls before you were allowed to go, eating through tears, with tears mixing into your rice.
Then came the homemade lanterns: milk cans and soap boxes carefully punched with little holes, with a tiny red candle tucked inside. The smoke stung your eyes, but somehow, the homemade lanterns still glowed beautifully.
One child carried a star-shaped lantern. Another pulled a spinning lantern. Someone else lit dried pomelo seeds, listening to them crackle.
And off they all went, running together through the narrow alleys beneath the August moon.
Those children have grown up now.
Some left their villages for the city. Others traveled far and wide, carrying with them all the busyness and worries of adult life.
But whenever August comes around, they look up at the bright, full moon, and their hearts grow a little softer.
Because some Mid-Autumn seasons may have passed a very long time ago, but the memories of them never grow old.
Perhaps the “thousand miles” of the 80s generation is the journey from those familiar little alleys to the lives we live today, far enough for us to grow up, but never far enough to forget a single moonlit season.
To everyone born in the 80s: do you still remember your very first Mid-Autumn lantern? ✈️🌕
