On this day in 1993, Toni Morrison made history when she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first Black woman to receive the honor.

Already celebrated for works including Beloved, Song of Solomon, and The Bluest Eye, Morrison’s writing placed Black life, memory, and history at the center of American literature.

33 years later, her legacy still speaks for itself. 🖤

The children are the future!

At just 11 years old, Cartier Carey turned a simple lemonade stand into a way to help families in his community.

After learning about diaper shortages during the pandemic, the Virginia native used the money he raised to donate more than 22,000 diapers to single mothers in need.

Commander Jessica Watkins has become the first Black woman to lead a crew to orbit: NASA’s Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station. Watkins made history in 2022 as the first Black woman to join a long-duration space mission.

Happy Birthday to Ruby Bridges!

At just 6 years old, Ruby walked into William Frantz Elementary School and became the first Black child to integrate the all-white school in 1960.

She was only a first grader, but that walk became a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement. More than 65 years later, Ruby is still doing the work, speaking to young people and advocating for equality in education.

Today, we celebrate her courage then and the work she continues today.
