Kruger National Park vs. Private Game Reserve: What's the difference?

This is a question we get asked a lot! The wildlife and landscapes can be equally spectacular in both, many private reserves share open, unfenced boundaries with Kruger, so animals move freely between the two. The real difference comes down to how you experience the safari.

Kruger National Park:
You self-drive on public roads, sharing sightings with other visitors along the way. It's freedom and flexibility at its best, perfect for independent travellers who love exploring at their own pace.

Private Game Reserves:
Game drives are led by experienced rangers and trackers, with off-road driving possible where permitted. Fewer vehicles at each sighting, plus early morning and evening drives, adding to a more intimate, exclusive experience.

So, which is better?
Neither. It simply depends on what you're looking for. And the best part is that both offer incredible Big 5 and wildlife encounters.

There are few experiences in Africa as peaceful as this.

A mokoro is a traditional canoe, once carved from a single hollowed-out tree trunk, though today most are made from durable fibreglass to help protect the Delta's trees.

Standing at the back, your poler guides you gently through crystal-clear channels, surrounded by reeds, water lilies, and the quiet sounds of the wilderness.

No engine. No rush. Just the gentle glide of the mokoro and the feeling of being completely immersed in nature.

Our Dutch group had the trip of a lifetime across South Africa, and they said it best themselves. From safaris that exceeded every expectation, to township visits that left a lasting impression, this journey had it all.

A massive thank you to our guide Kobus 🙌 he was there for the group every single day, made sure everyone felt looked after, brought South Africa's history to life with a story a day, and kept everyone laughing along the way. On top of the incredible itinerary, Kobus even organised extra activities to make the trip unforgettable.

A great group experience starts with the right base, and Never at Home - Kloof Street in Cape Town has been exactly that for our Dutch group series.

Just off the vibrant Kloof Street, it’s in a great location for young travellers to explore the city, with plenty of restaurants, cafés, bars and attractions all within walking distance.

One of the things we love most is the social atmosphere. Whether it’s a hike up Table Mountain or Lion’s Head, a weekly braai, games night or one of the many other activities on offer, there’s always something happening and it’s easy for guests to meet new people.

With modern, comfortable dorms and a team we know we can rely on, it’s a place we’re always happy to include in our itineraries for travellers aged 18–28.

One of the true highlights of our Australian group's South African journey was a full day spent soaking up the best of the Cape W**elands.

We started in Stellenbosch, wandering the oak-lined streets of one of South Africa's oldest towns for a taste of its history and charm.

From there, it's on to Muratie W**e Estate, where a w**e and chocolate pairing awaits in their famous "G*t" spiderweb cellar, which is always a group favourite (and always a good excuse for a toast 🥂).

The day closes at La Petite Ferme Franschhoek, with a w**e tasting and a beautiful three-course lunch overlooking the Franschhoek Valley (the kind of view that makes every glass taste a little better).

Another one of our Dutch groups is on the road today, making their way from Cape Town to Oudtshoorn. And it got us thinking... how do you make a six-hour travel day fun?

In South Africa, long travel days are all part of the adventure. The scenery is constantly changing, from vineyards and mountain passes to the wide-open landscapes of the Klein Karoo, making the journey just as memorable as the destination.

To keep the road trip fun, there’s always a quiz, a sing-along, plenty of laughs and stories about the places we’re travelling through. And every now and then, the best thing to do is simply look out the window and take it all in.
