The iconic “tablecloth” clouds over Table Mountain are caused by moist south-easterly winds rising up the mountain, cooling and condensing into thick cloud that spills dramatically over the flat summit.

Cloudy weather can completely transform the mountain’s appearance, from soft mist rolling over the cliffs to dramatic storm clouds over the Atlantic coastline.

Locals often say the mountain creates its own weather because conditions can change within minutes.

The original route was known as Gantouw Pass and was used by Khoi people long before colonial roads were built.

The modern pass was constructed between 1828 and 1830 by engineer Charles Michell and named after Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole, then governor of the Cape Colony.
