From Kampala to Cape Town: Jason Vanporppal's Extraordinary Journey Continues at Sea

On 30 May, we had the privilege of welcoming Jason Vanporppal and a friend aboard for a Marine Dynamics Shark Cage Diving and Dyer Island Conservation Experience.

Jason recently completed an extraordinary journey, skating from Kampala, Uganda, to Cape Town across seven African countries in more than 100 days. His mission was to raise funds for what is set to become Uganda's largest skatepark—a testament to the power of determination, perseverance, and creating opportunities for future generations.

His dedication to making a positive impact resonates strongly with our own commitment to marine conservation. Just as Jason's journey aims to inspire and uplift communities, our work strives to protect and preserve the incredible marine ecosystem of the Dyer Island region for generations to come.

During his trip, Jason experienced some of the remarkable wildlife that makes this area so special, including Bronze Whaler Sharks, Broadnose Sevengill Sharks, Short-tail Stingrays, Cape Fur Seals, and the rare sighting of Humpback Dolphins.

It was an honour to share this conservation journey with someone whose passion and determination are helping to create positive change far beyond the ocean.

As May comes to an end, we wanted to take a moment to look back on what has been an incredible month out at sea.

From breathtaking shark sightings and curious Bronze Whalers circling the boat to unforgettable moments shared with guests from around the world, every trip reminded us why we love what we do.

We've watched faces light up during first shark encounters, welcomed returning visitors back on board, and spent countless hours sharing the remarkable marine life that makes this coastline so special.

None of it would be possible without the support of our guests, travel partners, conservation supporters, photographers, researchers, crew, and everyone who chooses to spend a day on the ocean with us.

Thank you for being part of the Marine Dynamics family and for helping us create awareness, appreciation, and respect for sharks and the marine environment they call home.

Here's to more adventures, more discoveries, and many more unforgettable moments on the water in the months ahead.

See you out at sea.

People often ask why they should choose Marine Dynamics for shark cage diving.

For us, it’s never just been about getting into a cage. It’s about the whole experience of being out in one of the most incredible marine environments in the world.

You leave the harbour, and suddenly you’re surrounded by nature at its wildest; seabirds following the boat, the possibility of whales or dolphins passing by, and then that moment when sharks and maybe stingrays too, appear out of the blue water right in front of you. No aquarium, no documentary and no social media video can compare to seeing it with your own eyes.

What makes it even more special is knowing that the people taking you out to sea genuinely care about the ocean and the animals that live here. The trip becomes more than an activity on your holiday; it becomes something you remember long after you’ve dried off.

When you join Marine Dynamics, you’re not just booking an adventure. You’re supporting a team that believes sharks deserve understanding, protection and a future in our oceans and that every person who leaves the boat with a new respect for these animals becomes part of that story too

On the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, we celebrate the richness of life that makes our oceans so extraordinary, and so worth protecting.
Along the Gansbaai coastline, Marine Dynamics is surrounded by an incredible diversity of marine species. From apex predators like sharks to playful dolphins, migrating whales, and the many seabirds that rely on our shores, each organism is part of a finely balanced ecosystem.

Biodiversity is more than just a count of species, it’s the foundation of healthy oceans. Every interaction, from the smallest plankton to the largest marine mammals, helps sustain the environment we all depend on.
At Marine Dynamics, our mission is rooted in understanding and protecting this balance. Through ongoing research, conservation efforts, and education, we aim to safeguard the biodiversity that makes this region so unique.
This International Day for Biological Diversity, we’re reminded that protecting our oceans means protecting the intricate web of life within them, because when biodiversity thrives, so do we.

Three sharks. Three completely different eyes.

A shark’s eyes are uniquely adapted to the environment it hunts in, and each species has its own distinctive look and survival advantage.

🔹 Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias)
Known for its striking deep blue iris, although it can appear black in darker water or low light. Great whites also roll their eyes back into their sockets for protection when feeding.

🔹 Bronze Whaler Shark (Carcharhinus brachyurus)
Also called the Copper Shark, Bronze whaler sharks (also known as copper sharks) have striking light golden-green eyes with dark slit pupils. Their eyes are uniquely adapted for hunting in changing coastal lighting and feature a protective nictitating membrane, a specialised eyelid that they can roll over their eyes for protection

🔹 Broadnose Sevengill Shark (Notorynchus cepedianus)
An ancient shark species recognised by its smaller green-grey eyes, perfectly suited for deeper, darker coastal environments and low-light hunting conditions.

Can you guess which eye belongs to which shark?
