📢ENGAGE WITH US ON HOW WE ENGAGE WITH YOU🗣️

Community feedback is being sought on Council's Draft Public Consultation and Community Engagement Policy. Quite simply, we want you to engage with us on how we engage with you! 😊

Council endorsed a reviewed Public Consultation and Community Engagement Policy less than 2 years ago, however under new legislation which came into effect in December last year, councils must now again review their community engagement policies so they align with the new Community Engagement Charter.

Council's current community engagement processes already align with the new Community Engagement Charter - in fact, most of the time Council has been engaging with the community more than is required by legislation. As such, this review has required little change to the policy apart from referencing the mandatory provisions of the Community Engagement Charter and some changes to the policy language to be consistent with the model policy developed by the Local Government Association of SA and Norman Waterhouse.

The Community Engagement Charter, which came into effect on 11 December 2025, replaces the old, detailed public consultation rules in the Local Government Act. Changes to these rules were flagged as part of the 2021 local government reforms.

The charter sets different levels of required engagement based on how important a decision is - for example, significant, standard or local matters.

You can view the Community Engagement Charter and Council's Draft Public Consultation and Community Engagement Policy on the Your Say project page on Council's website at https://yoursay.naracoortelucindale.sa.gov.au/

In accordance with Sections 50 and 50A of the Local Government Act, Council is now inviting community feedback on its Draft Public Consultation and Community Engagement Policy, which incorporates the Community Engagement Charter and outlines how Council will consult with the community, support transparent decision-making and provide access to information and participation opportunities.

The Draft Policy sets out how Council will meet these obligations by:
✅Providing clear and accessible information
✅Ensuring consultation is appropriate to the significance of the decision
✅Creating opportunities for meaningful participation
✅Considering community feedback prior to making decisions

The consultation period on the Draft Policy will run for a period of 21 days from Thursday 28 May until Thursday 18 June with any responses to be collated and presented to Council for consideration and endorsement of the policy at its June 23 monthly meeting.

Submissions can be made by:
💻Completing the online form on the Your Say project page on Council's website at https://yoursay.naracoortelucindale.sa.gov.au/
📝Completing a hard copy feedback form from the Naracoorte and Lucindale Council offices or Naracoorte Library (hard copies of the Draft Policy and Community Engagement Charter are provided with the hard copy feedback forms)
📧Emailing Council at [email protected]
✍Writing to Council at PO Box 555, Naracoorte, SA, 5271
