Sometimes a green and pastoral walking trail is actually a testament to an unimaginable history.
When walking and enjoying the quiet, it is easy to forget the past of this place, until you stop in front of a signpost on the path.
These signs mark the Berliner Mauerweg, the Berlin Wall Trail. This 160 kilometer circular route accurately follows the old border that once surrounded West Berlin.
The central sign, titled Erinnerungsmarken (memory markers), notes a unique point: the neighborhood of Klein Glienicke.
This small area held the unofficial title of one of the most bizarre places during the Cold War. It was an East German enclave surrounded on three sides by West Berlin territory. Because of this sensitive location, authorities turned it into an extremely fortified security zone. The wall ran right through backyards, cutting off families and neighbors. Residents needed special permits just to enter their own homes, turning the area into an isolated, heavily secured island.
As described on the sign, it is a journey through time into the era of the Wall and the fall of the Wall.
