The simple Anderson shelter was named after John Anderson a government official who was responsible for Civil Defence and preparing Britain fircenemy bombing raids. Although they were no defence against a direct hit they saved 1000's of lives. Here are some light hearted and typically British modifications which were made before the Blitz began. The later images show how effective they could be during those terrible nights. We've now completed our Anderson shelter display which you can now see as part of our weekly air raid shelter tours. Today is Battle of Britain day. A time to remember those brave young pilots who gave their service and their lives between the 10th of July and the 31st of October 1940. We had the 501 squadron operating from Filton here in Bristol (where they were also founded.) The average ife expectancy of a fighter pilot during the peak of the Battle of Britain was often cited as just four weeks. They were given 2 months training in basic aircraft before heading into battle with less than 2 weeks experience high performance fighters.

Our air raid shelter has been lovingly restored with wartime artefacts. It's like stepping back into the 1940's. A real wi dow back to the Blitz. Many of the items have arrived from elsewhere. Some, like these paraffin heaters and stoves have been sitting beneath St. Nicholas Market since the end of WW2. The smell of the paraffin must have been awful as up to 200 people sheltered beneath the street. A shelter within a shelter. Our Bristol Blitz exhibit keeps getting better and better! This Anderson shelter once stood in Westbury On Trym. We've now brought it now back to life with wartime artefacts as part of our shelter renovation. Imagine spending hours in there waiting for the all clear bell to ring out. One of the most amazing items to have been donated recently is this piece of shrapnel, which crashed through the roof of a bakery in Bedminster, Brstol. It hit the ground red, hot and right next to Reginald Edward Luton who was working the night shift and happened to be sitting on the loo! We've acquired the most incredible collection of unique Bristol wartime artefacts and now have the wonderful opportunity to display them in our amazing, new Brstol , Blitz exhibit.
