This story is told in Visit Derry and there's a plaque across from it on the Old Northern Counties Hotel building marking were Amelia made her press conference on her landing, broadcasting the news accross the globe. Amelia was an aviation pioneer and Derrys so proud to have had her here for this very historic landing 🛩❤️🇨🇦🇮🇪

✈️ A Sky-Touched Moment in Derry: Amelia Earhart’s Irish Landing

On the morning of May 21ˢᵗ, 1932, a field outside Derry became part of world history.

After battling winds, freezing rain, and mechanical trouble for nearly 15 hours, Amelia Earhart—then just 34—landed her little red Lockheed Vega in a green field in Ballyarnett, County Derry. She had taken off from Newfoundland with dreams of Paris. She touched down in Ireland instead.

And in doing so, she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Locals still tell the story: she stepped out of the plane, walked toward the Gallagher family’s cottage, and said simply, “I’ve just come from America.”

That night, she stayed with the Gallaghers. A quiet moment of hospitality in the middle of a global headline.

Derry hasn’t forgotten her. A cottage in Ballyarnett Park marks the landing. A plaque stands at the hotel where she gave her first press conference. And in 2024, a mural was unveiled to honour the moment when a courageous American pilot found herself not in Paris, but in Ulster.

History often remembers the flight.
But Derry remembers the landing. ♥🤍

I remember my grandfather telling me about this very tragic and untold history of our city

* Here we have a quite a detailed “aerial” image of Derry, used to illustrate key locations in the tragic, week long, communal conflict of June 1920, which left 20 dead. Many incidents occurred about Bishop St, Long Tower, Bridge St, St Columb’s College and Spencer Rd Cross St & Chapel Rd in the Waterside.

There are many features noted, including the destroyer on the Foyle, whose searchlights sought out snipers across the city’s night time skyline. This period was never spoken of in school history lessons.

Absolutely love this!! ❤️

* This 1929 image reflects 2 public transport vehicles of the time. On left is a bus run by Catherwoods who were given a 20 year franchise in 1929 to run the City services. In the background is the Bryce & Weston shirt factory built 1921 on Strand Rd and one of the city’s later shirt factories. It was later Wilkinson’s factory and then Long’s supermarket.

Who recalls some of the interesting buses that have served the City in more recent decades? Do share in the comments! Thanks to Joseph Keys for sharing this image.
