Where are all my solo travellers?

There’s something wonderfully liberating about arriving somewhere new and knowing the adventure is entirely your own. ✈️🌍

Solo travel gives you the freedom to follow your curiosity and move at your own pace. It can be exciting, empowering and genuinely life-changing.

I love a solo holiday. And/but I remember how taking that first trip felt so very daunting. (That was to Hong Kong, so long ago that HK was still British 🙈)

I understand both the joy of travelling alone and the practical considerations that can come with it.

A brilliant evening at Travel Trade Events Summer BBQ in Edinburgh! ☔️ 😬

These events are always such a valuable opportunity to learn, make new connections and catch up with familiar faces: while discovering new destinations, hotels and experiences to share with my lovely clients.

It was great to meet Shenika Ramsey from the Jamaica Tourist Board face-to-face for the first time, and to catch up with Joel Henry from Antigua - two of my favourite Caribbean destinations. 🇯🇲🇦🇬

I also completely fell in love with the idea of La Gomera, the wonderfully unspoilt island just off Tenerife. That was even before I discovered I’d won a three-night trip there 🥳 , so I’ll soon have the chance to experience it for myself! 💚

Sandals were there too, so keep your eyes peeled for some tempting Caribbean offers over the next few days.

Plenty of learning, lots of lovely conversations and some fantastic food … including cake. Always an important part of professional development, I think! 🍰

Goodbye August 😘

🍂 Hello September…

As the seasons begin to change, September brings its own particular kind of magic.

It’s a wonderful month to travel: the intense summer heat is beginning to soften, the busiest crowds are beginning to disappear and, in many places, the sea is still beautifully warm.

Where could September take you?

🇬🇷 The Greek Islands; sunshine, warm seas and a gentler pace
🇮🇹 Italy; perfect for food, culture and late-summer warmth
🇭🇷 Croatia; beautiful coastlines without the peak-season bustle

And while we are waving goodbye to summer, now is the perfect time to look ahead to a winter escape. Whether you’re dreaming of Caribbean sunshine, an Indian Ocean hideaway, a cultural adventure or a cosy festive break, this is a very good time to start planning.

Some holidays are remembered for the hotel. Some for the food, the weather or the view. But very often, it’s one extraordinary experience that becomes the story you tell for years afterwards. ✨

Picture this .. Rome before sunrise.

The streets are still quiet as you make your way towards the Vatican, joining a small group before the museums have opened to the public.

Then you meet the Vatican’s Key Master.

You follow him through the darkened galleries as, one by one, the lights are switched on. Raphael. Michelangelo. Ancient sculptures and extraordinary works of art emerging from the darkness; without the thousands of visitors who will fill these rooms later in the day.

And then you reach a pair of small wooden doors.

The doors to the Sistine Chapel.

On this incredibly exclusive experience, guests may even have the opportunity to take the key and open those doors themselves , just as they have been opened for cardinals and popes for centuries.

Then you step inside.

No general public. No enormous crowds. Just the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo’s extraordinary ceiling above you.

That is the sort of moment a holiday can be built around.

And it’s exactly why I believe the experiences we choose matter so much. I don’t simply want to help you book somewhere to go. I want to help create a holiday containing moments that stay with you long after you’ve unpacked the suitcase.

August … whoosh, there she was gone!

Is there anywhere else in the world to be in August other than Edinburgh?! If you haven’t been to one of the city’s Festivals (International, Book, Fringe, Art, Film) or the Tattoo - you’re missing out!

Of course, I didn’t spend the whole month in Edinburgh this year. I was busy settling into my new Borders home. Colander at the ready for the eclipse - which wasn’t exactly what I had expected.

There was lots of work too. I attended a wonderful event organised by the Abu Dhabi tourist board. What a beautiful, fascinating, captivating Emirate this is. I’ll be sharing more about Abu Dhabi through September.

And, of course, Travel Lightly clients were off making special memories right through the month.

Hope you all had a wonderful August wherever you were. Here’s to a spectacular September.

Imagine yourself waking up in Marrakech, the morning light filtering through the palms of a peaceful riad… and knowing that a few days later you’ll be watching the sun set over the Sahara. 🏜️✨

Morocco is one of those places that feels like a proper adventure without needing weeks away.

Spend time wandering Marrakech’s colourful souks and hidden courtyards before leaving the city behind and heading across the spectacular Atlas Mountains.

Explore ancient Ait Ben Haddou, follow the road south through kasbah country and then, as the landscape changes again, climb onto a camel and make your way across the dunes of Erg Chebbi as the sun begins to drop.

That evening? Dinner beneath the desert sky, Berber hospitality and a night in a Sahara camp. 🌙🐪

Then it’s onwards to Ouarzazate, with its kasbahs and extraordinary film history, before returning to Marrakech.

And November is a lovely time to do it; cooler temperatures, fewer crowds and much more comfortable conditions for exploring.

It really is wonderful to be back in the Borders.

It’s a place I love and am passionate about.

It’s Scotland’s best-kept secret in many ways.

My home is near The Eildons in the central Borders. It’s peaceful and so beautiful. The landscape here has remained unchanged for thousands of years - and there’s something very special about that. Not to get too whimsical about it but I have often thought, when roaming these Borders hills, fields and river banks, about the generations of women before me who have walked along the same paths.

Of course, the land has been shaped by farming across the years, but for all that there are miles of rolling hills with no roads, no pylons and no modern day blots on the horizon - and the views feel timeless.

The same hills have watched over Iron Age communities, Roman soldiers, Border families and travellers for centuries and they still beautifully dominate the skyline today.

There is so much here to see, do and experience: beautiful walks, ruined abbeys, ancient forts, historic houses, pretty towns and villages, wonderful local food and miles of glorious countryside.

And all of this is only around an hour from Edinburgh.

I am very lucky to call The Borders home ❤️
