Hummingbird has set off from Bona Vista, bound for St Anthony’s on the north east tip of Newfoundland.

The latest ice charts show around 6 to 8 icebergs per degree, roughly every 60nm, which means good, clear conditions for this section. They have already passed three icebergs safely and without incident.

As always, we only sail near ice in moderate conditions and in daylight as much as possible. The adventure towards Greenland continues.

Hummingbird has left St John’s, Newfoundland and is now on her long passage north towards Greenland.

Tonight she is heading for Bonavista, one of Newfoundland’s most historic outports, famous as the place where John Cabot is said to have first landed in North America in 1497. It is also a wild, beautiful coastline of cliffs, seabirds, whales and proper Newfoundland scenery.

Out there today it feels like -2°C with wind chill, with 20 knots of wind, but great sailing conditions and icy bits in the sea here and there. It's (very!) cold and raw, but spectacular and exactly the sort of adventure we love!

This season we’re testing the new Anchorplex Drop Anchor

It's big USP is its patented mechanical interlocking system that removes the need for welding, bending and lead ballasting, helping maintain long lasting structural integrity.

We’ll be putting it through real world use in varied anchoring conditions and will report back on how it performs, all written up in Yachting World.

We’re delighted to share that Rubicon 3 has been awarded a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award 2026.

This award means a lot because it is based on the reviews and experiences of our crew. Every crossing, every wild anchorage, every watch system, every difficult decision at sea and every shared meal on board only works because of the people who join us and the skippers and mates who look after them.

A huge thank you to everyone who has sailed with us, reviewed us, recommended us and helped build such a strong community around real adventure sailing.

We’re very proud of the team, and even more grateful to our crew.

Here’s to more miles, more remote anchorages and more proper adventures under sail.

After 2500 miles across the Western half of the Atlantic Ocean, SY Bluejay has arrived in the Azores and Horta. All navigated without GPS and using their newfound celestial navigation skills. A quick bit of R&R, an explore and they'll be off again bound for Ireland and Scotland.

250 miles to go to the Azores! The fishing lure bobs unbitten in our wake. We continue to work our way eastwards along the unsettled top edge of the high. A big blow from the north is promised, but so far it is only a middling Sou’easter. But who cares when you see this many whales! More seen today, only a couple of boat lengths away. And accompanied by Manx shearwaters and a lonely tern. Loads more dolphins too.
Food remains at an extraordinary high standard. Each day two people spend the day in the galley amongst the pots and pans. They have free rein to produce what they fancy (from a list of broad menu choices) and then they put their own individual spin on it. With so much passion going in, I don’t think I can rely on using the trip to lose some much needed weight.
It’s much colder now. Especially at night (when it always seems to rain, to compound the enjoyment!!). Everyone is in full waterproofs, and so still seem to be smiling at the end of each watch. They are truly an extraordinary bunch!

A few highlights from a magical last month of sailing. Some of these from the Bahamas, Dominican Republic and Caribbean, others almost live from Bluejay’s current Atlantic crossing. All very life affirming and fun!
