DONCASTER SHEFFIELD AIRPORT COULD BE SOLD IN MAJOR CHANGE TO REOPENING PLANS
A major development has emerged in the campaign to bring flights back to Doncaster Sheffield Airport, with reports suggesting South Yorkshire's mayoral authority is close to agreeing a deal to buy the airport outright.
The airport, which closed in November 2022, is currently owned by the Peel Group. Until now, efforts to reopen it have focused on securing a long-term lease rather than purchasing the site.
According to new reporting from the Local Democracy Reporting Service, much of a potential purchase agreement has been settled, although no sale price has been disclosed.
The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority has confirmed that negotiations with the landowner are continuing, but has not confirmed that a purchase has been agreed.
Around £160 million in public funding was approved in September 2025 to support reopening the airport, subject to conditions. Officials are expected to provide a further update at a mayoral authority meeting later this month.
The airport is working towards a return of passenger flights in 2028, although no confirmed reopening date has been announced.
Would you welcome the airport coming into public ownership if it helps bring flights back to South Yorkshire?
