Brook Cottage, Challacombe | Just the two of you, and a sun-room.

Originally an agricultural dwelling, with two bedrooms knocked into one large double-aspect room, plus a sun-room added later and insulation throughout. Small, warm and set up for a couple.

Challacombe sits high on the western side of the moor near the Chains, the boggy plateau where the Exe and the Barle both rise. It is a good base if you want walking straight from the door.

Where would you go first, with the whole of the western moor on your doorstep?

Vikings Annexe, Minehead | "We had a fabulous stay, perfect position for exploring the south west coast path. Hosts are wonderful 😊"

Another 5-star review from a happy guest at Vikings Annexe, Minehead.

Set in stunning Minehead, this cottage offers an unforgettable Exmoor escape. Whether you're here for long walks across the moor or quiet evenings by the fire, this is a place that stays with you. The landscape around Minehead is some of the finest in the South West, and this cottage puts you right at the heart of it.

Porlock Marsh | The drowned trees, and the sea that did it.

Bare skeletons of trees standing in green samphire and saltmarsh grass. The sea broke through the shingle ridge here in 1996 and never went back, and the salt killed every tree it reached within a couple of seasons.

What was grazing marsh is now one of the best places for birds on this coast, with waders and little egrets out on the flats through the autumn. The Coast Path runs along the ridge between the marsh and the sea.

Have you walked out across the marsh to the shingle ridge?

Red Deer Cottage, Wheddon Cross | A converted barn on a working farm.

A detached barn conversion for six, spacious and flexible enough for a family or a group travelling together. It sits on a working farm, so there is normally something happening in the yard.

Late September and October are when the red deer rut starts on Exmoor, and the roaring carries a long way on a still morning. Dunkery and the Punchbowl are both within a walk of the village.

Have you ever been out early enough to hear the stags roaring?

Combe Martin | Benches out, tide out, sun going down. βš“

The seafront at Combe Martin in the last of the evening light, picnic benches empty on the terrace and the beach cleared right out by the tide. 🌊 The headland beyond has already gone into shadow for the night.

Combe Martin has the longest village street in the country running inland from this beach, nearly two miles of it. β˜• It marks the western end of Exmoor, where the moor finally gives way to the Devon coast proper.

Beach in the evening or beach first thing, which is your kind of day? πŸ’¬

The Granary, Luxborough | Beams, bare stone and a boot room.

You come in through a boot room with proper space for wet coats, into an open-plan living space with beams and an exposed stone wall at one end. Finished to a high standard, comfortable, and set up for four.

Luxborough sits in a fold of the Brendon Hills with the Royal Oak at its centre, one of the best-known pubs on Exmoor. The lanes around it are some of the quietest anywhere on the moor.

Is a good village pub within walking distance part of the decision for you?

Selworthy Beacon | Birches, bracken and the low sun through.

Thin birch trunks with the sun coming through them almost horizontally, and the bracken underneath already turned full rust and orange. The grass is still green, which is what makes the colour underfoot look so strong.

The birch scrub sits just below the Beacon itself, on the walk up from Selworthy village or along from Bossington Hill. It is one of the first places anywhere on this coast to properly show its autumn colour.

Early morning or late afternoon light, if you had the choice?

Grist Mill, Dunster | A period cottage in the medieval village.

A semi-detached period cottage with three double bedrooms and a loft room with a sofa-bed, so it flexes between six and eight. Beams, thick walls and the whole of the village a few steps from the door.

Dunster is about as complete a medieval village as England has: the castle above it, the octagonal yarn market in the street, a working watermill still grinding flour, and the old packhorse bridge over the Avill.

Have you been up to Dunster Castle, or only ever seen it from the road?
