Camino Le Puy (GR65 – Via Podiensis)
Day 14 – Decazeville to Figeac
📍28km

After a fantastic night’s sleep in the “ghost hotel”, I enjoyed a good breakfast and packed picnic before setting off around 8.30am.

As usual, the day began with a steady climb out of town.
It felt like I spent the entire day going up... then down... then up again... and down again! Through farmland, small villages and a few forests, with plenty of flies joining me along the way.

By the time I reached Figeac it was a very hot 32°C.
Another tough day on the Camino, but every kilometre brings me closer to Saint Jean Pied de Port.

Camino Le Puy (GR65 – Via Podiensis)
Day 13 – Conques to Decazeville
📍20km

The day began with a steep climb out of Conques , 350 metres in the first 3 kilometres!

The ascent was rocky and wound through beautiful forests. It still amazes me that in the middle of nowhere you’ll suddenly come across a tiny church.

The rest of the day took me through farmland with a little road walking, but there was virtually no traffic. I arrived at my hotel around 1.45pm... and that’s when today’s adventure began!

The hotel looked completely deserted and locked up. It was Sunday, so I thought I’d just wait until 3pm when many hotels open.

Three o’clock came... still nobody.

Looking more closely at my booking, I found a note saying to use my access code. The problem was... I didn’t have one!

With no way of calling the emergency number, I headed to the local police station. After my best “Bonjour”, a very kind policeman let me in, rang the hotel for me, translated everything and got me my room number and access code.

So tonight I’m staying in what feels like a ghost hotel... with just one other pilgrim!

Day 12 – Rest Day in Conques

Today was a well-earned rest day in the stunning medieval village of Conques.

Built on a steep hillside, Conques is one of the most beautiful villages on the Camino. Wandering its narrow streets, surrounded by centuries of history, was an experience in itself.

What an amazing place.

Day 11 – Espeyrac to Conques
📍22km

I met up with Percy at 9.15am and we set off together for today’s walk.

What a difference the weather made! I started the day in shorts and a T-shirt, and it just kept getting warmer. By this afternoon it had reached 29°C.

Today’s walk took us through more beautiful farmland and forests, passing tiny villages along the way. One thing I’ve noticed is that even the smallest villages seem to have impressive churches.

Another wonderful day on the Camino with good company, beautiful scenery and plenty to see.

Day 10 – Estaing to Espeyrac
📍25km

A beautiful sunny morning greeted me as I left Estaing.

After climbing out of town alongside the river, the trail soon led into peaceful pastures, forests and tiny villages.
It was one of those days where the scenery was lovely and the conversation even better.

Percy and I walked and talked all day, making the kilometres pass almost without noticing.

Sometimes it’s the people you meet along the Camino who make the journey just as memorable as the places you visit.
