A significant piece of World War II history has been severely damaged by fire.

The Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), perched high in the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden, was engulfed in flames Friday evening.

Built in 1938 during the N**i regime, the Eagle’s Nest survived World War II largely untouched and later became a historical attraction, welcoming visitors interested in learning about this dark chapter of history.

While its past is deeply troubling, sites like this serve an important purpose: preserving history, educating future generations, and reminding us of events that should never be forgotten.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, and the extent of the damage is still being assessed. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

Travel is about more than seeing beautiful places. It’s also about understanding the history that shaped them.

A few of my favorites right now are river sailings, where the coffee tastes better simply because of what’s outside the window.

AmaWaterways on the Danube. Budapest to Vilshofen. About 150 people on board. You dock right in town, so you’re off the ship and walking past cafés within minutes.

Viking on the Rhine. Basel to Amsterdam. Their ships pull into the center of small cities, so you’re not commuting into the experience. You’re already there.

Uniworld on the Douro. Porto round-trip. Smaller ship, easy layout, and long stretches where it’s just vineyards and river, and you actually sit still long enough to notice.

Just a steady glide past places you’d normally miss altogether and a great way to experience Europe.
