Weekend Stepping around Maboneng with Locals…

This entire group are South Africans who grew up in the South of Joburg (Mondeor, Glenanda, Glen Vista) but have all emigrated to Australia and regularly visit home to catch up with family and friends…

…while a lot has changed for them since they last visited Maboneng in 2019, they were very excited to see all the new developments and influx of young people into the City and the Street Art!

Tours with locals are always fun because of the South African banter and exchanges - okes weren’t to happy about how Jeppe seems to be klapping KES these days with the usual “not during my days” argument haha!

Friday afternoon…Anna and Emanuel (siblings from Italy 🇮🇹) exchanging fashion/styling tips with the crew from H.H.C 🇿🇦 in the streets of Maboneng!

Anna is a student studying Psychology in Milan, while Emanuele is a former art student who lives in Rome because of his love for Rugby and Soccer…

While Anna loved hearing more about the art and style culture of Joburg, Emanuele was more interested in sharing stories about Rugby culture in South Africa and Italy where rugby is gaining more and more popularity amongst younger people…he plays both on a social level after having played rugby up to the varsity level!

They’re visiting their Mom who works in South Africa and this was an opportunity for them to learn a bit more about Joburg’s Street Culture before heading off with the rest of the family for a holiday across South Africa!

Suzanne and Emma partly booked this tour to help with a project they’re working on which we’re excited about as one of the themes it’s centred around is Graffiti and Street Art…

As usual, this tour also covers the culture and changes in Maboneng from 2009 - today to provide the story and context for all the amazing art in and around the neighbourhood!

The Maboneng-Jewel City Precinct is an area of the City in a state of constant flux, with more and more young people calling the area home…it’s exciting to see how this area has transformed and accelerated in the past few years!

Both Erik and Trin grew up around and still enjoy alternative and underground culture anywhere they find it; they had an interesting conversation with the Hip Hop Cargo crew about how their style and self-expression is perceived and received on a day-to-day basis by people in and around Johannesburg haha…

For them, they loved being in Maboneng and seeing how it’s an area that still celebrates strong forms of individual expression while providing a space where they could engage with some of the City’s Street Culture!

A fun morning out with the family of one of our favourite Joburg people, checking out the City’s Graffiti, Street Art and History!

Ranging in age from 8 - 60+, the City had a bit for everyone…

…the different tags/burners/throw-ups kept the younger ones engaged…

…stories of the City’s music and underground party scene excited the teens/students = AND Club et al haha…

….an exchange of experiences and stories in Braamfontein, Newtown and Maboneng from 2010 - 2026 with the groovingtons (25 - 40) was a fun recollection of crazy moments, hilarious throwbacks and party spots that are no more…

…while the Grandparents enjoyed walking the streets and sharing their version of what Joburg was like in the 60s - 90s…super fascinating learning about Joburg from this perspective!

Always a great time with Joburgers that still see the magic the City has to offer - thank you Heather for organising and bringing everyone along!

All smiles after dinner with the Gastronomic Smuggler of Yeoville…

Last week we hosted our American 🇺🇸 guests for dinner at the as part of their research for a planned trip next year with a much larger group of high school students (50+)…

Their choice is between visiting South Africa or visiting Kenya for 4 weeks so we wanted to show them why they should choose SA by showing them what they can experience in Joburg!

The dinner in Yeoville gave them a great opportunity to engage with the story and rich history of one of Joburg’s most culturally diverse neighbourhoods while also meeting and conversing with locals from different walks of life i.e. Chef, Doctor, Media Personality, Teacher, Social Media Influencer etc….

Tying everything together was the African food on the table - inspired by Chef Sanza’s travels all across the world - accompanied by his amazing storytelling and stories of meeting some really cool and eclectic characters from all over the globe!

The is an absolute “Must do” on any Johannesburg itinerary…and we never tire of taking (and recommending) our guests there!

Lunch at “The Verander” rooftop at the after a fun Johannesburg Walking Tour with this team from Standard Bank!

This group - from the Brand Activation department - was interested in the Art and Street Culture scene around Marshalltown with a focus on creative entrepreneurs around the Inner City and what a fun day we had…

We visited the following places in Marshalltown…

- learning about the travels and inspiring story of founder Sebo!

- hearing the interesting story of Founder Griffin and how he came to create this dope concept!

- empowering the youth through the textile and fashion design industry…a really exciting journey through the academy and seeing the students in action!
skateboards - a local skateboard and street wear brand…great fun seeing custom painted decks and learning about how skateboards are pressed and made (last slide)

This was such a fun time with the group and we finished it all off with lunch and drinks at Braamfontein’s newest rooftop at the 🍸🍻🥂!

We love doing immersions and team-building tours with local companies as it allows us to share the culture of the City with brands and companies that wouldn’t ordinarily engage with the City from the Street Culture level…we love it!

Coffee breaks at with our Boston Consulting Group crew on our Johannesburg Walking Tour!

We enjoyed a fun Friday afternoon with this group of 4 walking across Marshalltown, City and Suburban and Maboneng with the aim of giving them a better context of the inner city’s development(s) post COVID as they work with to create better people-centres spaces across the City.

While for some this was their first time in the City in any capacity, for some it was a rekindling of a space they used to call their stomping ground…

It’s always interesting getting Joburg locals and South Africans from different backgrounds on these tours as it’s always fascinating (and eye-opening) to hear their pre- and post tour ideas of Joburg’s inner city…makes for some entertaining conversations haha!
