Zebras are African equines with distinctive black-and-white striped coats. Each zebra has a unique stripe pattern. When young zebra are born, the mare will screen her foal from any other zebra until her own stripe pattern has been imprinted on the foal, to ensure recognition. There are two types of zebra found in South Africa - the plains zebra and the mountain zebra. The differences between the two is their size, (mountain zebra being smaller), habitat, and mountain zebra have a white belly. Zebras are grazers and eating a lot of fibre means that they require a regular supply of clean drinking water. A stallion practices a true harem system. Colts will leave the herd at 2 years and will approach other herds with the intention of abducting fillies to start their own harem. Stalions will valiantly defend their harems. A group of zebras is called a Dazzle.
