The old saying goes, "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is."
Unfortunately, we're seeing that become a reality far too often.
This week, Citizens Advice highlighted growing concerns about poor practices when consumers book holidays online and through social media. From misleading property descriptions and fake reviews to accommodation that bears little resemblance to the photos, holidaymakers are increasingly finding themselves disappointed, out of pocket, and with nowhere to turn when things go wrong.
As travel agents, we see the aftermath regularly.
People call us hoping we can help fix a booking disaster. Others come to us after a holiday that simply wasn't what they were sold online. Many tell us the same thing:
*"We thought booking online would be cheaper and easier."*
Then comes the awkward conversation when we ask, "Did you enjoy your holiday?"
You know the look.
That uncomfortable smile. The hesitant "Yeah... it was alright."
And you can tell they've spent thousands of pounds on something that wasn't remotely what they expected.
The reality is that a holiday is often the biggest purchase a family makes each year. It's not just about finding the cheapest price; it's about making sure the holiday is right for you, that the company behind it is trustworthy, and that you have protection if things don't go to plan.
When you book through an ABTA member and an ATOL-protected travel company, you have financial protection, expert advice, and most importantly, a real person who will fight your corner if there's a problem. ABTA continues to warn consumers about travel fraud, fake accommodation listings and misleading online offers that can leave travellers stranded or significantly out of pocket.
We don't just sell holidays.
We help make sure your precious time away is everything you hoped it would be.
Before you click "Book Now" on that social media advert or online deal, ask yourself one question:
If something goes wrong, who is actually going to help?
