Twenty-four years ago, Tom and I stayed in a friend’s villa near Kuşadası, Turkey, and took a jet-lagged first-day tour of Ephesus. I was half asleep the entire time and mostly remember the guide saying, “this is very important.”

I told Tom I needed a book just so I could actually remember it all… and now, here we are with those books in hand, heading back this September.

The Douro River Valley is nothing short of extraordinary—one of Portugal’s most breathtaking regions, where dramatic, terraced hills wind along the river, producing the country’s beloved port wine. Unlike other wine regions of Europe, there are no grand castles or stone fortresses—just timeless farms, quiet villages, and landscapes that feel almost untouched. Here, the only thing truly fortified is the wine.

We experienced this incredible place in December, and as beautiful as this image is… it still doesn’t come close to capturing just how amazing it feels in person.
