Looking for an international getaway that won’t completely break the bank? 💰🌎

For South African passport holders, Bali, Thailand and Zanzibar are three fantastic options where your Rand can go further — with beautiful beaches, great food, affordable accommodation and plenty to see and do!

🥇 BALI, INDONESIA 🇮🇩

🌴 Why go? Think tropical beaches, rice terraces, temples, beach clubs, amazing food and affordable villas.

💰 Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
Approximately R1 = IDR 1,105 at current rates.
For example, IDR 1,000,000 ≈ R905. Exchange rates fluctuate daily.

✈️ Flights: There are no direct flights from South Africa to Bali, so you’ll generally travel via a hub such as Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Singapore. Current return fares from Cape Town can be found from around R12,800, depending on dates and availability.

🛂 Visa: South African ordinary passport holders can use Indonesia’s Visa on Arrival (VoA). It costs IDR 500,000 (approximately R450) and allows an initial stay of 30 days, with the option to extend once for another 30 days. Your passport must have at least 6 months' validity and you need an onward/return ticket.

🥈 THAILAND 🇹🇭

🌴 Why go? Affordable hotels, incredible street food, beautiful islands, massages, shopping and some of the best value for money in Asia!

💰 Currency: Thai Baht (THB)
Approximately R1 = THB 2.04
So THB 1,000 ≈ R490.

✈️ Flights: From Johannesburg to Bangkok, current return fares can be found from around R9,700–R10,700, depending on dates and airline. Phuket can also be very reasonably priced.

🛂 Visa: GREAT NEWS — South African passport holders can visit Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days for tourism. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and you should have a return/onward ticket.

🥉 ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA 🇹🇿

🏝️ Why go? White-sand beaches, turquoise water, Stone Town, spice tours and gorgeous resorts — all without travelling halfway around the world!

💰 Currency: Tanzanian Shilling (TZS)
Approximately R1 = TZS 165
So TZS 100,000 ≈ R605.

✈️ Flights: Zanzibar is particularly attractive for South Africans because of the relatively short flight time. Johannesburg–Zanzibar has direct services, with the non-stop flight taking around 3 hours 35 minutes. Airlink has also launched a non-stop Cape Town–Zanzibar service from October 2026, making Zanzibar even easier for Capetonians!

🛂 Visa: South African passport holders do NOT require a visa for Tanzania/Zanzibar for stays of up to 90 days.
