The mornings that started with mist over Hout Bay, the Chapman's Peak drives with no other cars, the Cape Point cloud rolling in below the cliffs, the penguins at Boulders before the crowds. That's been the last three months.

Spring shifts everything. More people at the icons, warmer light, a different pace on the coast. Both seasons have their day.

The Stellenbosch valley at first light doesn't look like the same place it does at noon 🎈

You go up in the balloon before the wind picks up. The vineyards below are still in shadow, the mountains catch the sun before the ground does, and for forty-five minutes you drift. Quiet, except for the burner.

Anna and her husband came out for their honeymoon. Early Cape Town start, coffee on the way, the balloon over the W**elands, a slow brunch after, then two different w**e tastings to close the day.

Visit Stellenbosch Cape W**elands

Some days it isn't about seeing the whole Peninsula. It's about seeing enough of it that everyone still enjoys the drive home 🐧

The off-beaten-track family Peninsula day is built around the pace of the group. Boulders for the penguins in the morning, before the crowds. A stop somewhere quiet along False Bay for a snack. Cape Point when the wind allows and the kids still have energy. Chapman's Peak in the afternoon light on the way back.

There's no fixed route. The guide reads the day as it goes — a longer stop here, a shorter one there, an ice-cream break when the smaller ones need one.

Spring is the right season for it. Fewer people. More time.

Cape Town has a version you only see on foot 🏛️

Feliz runs our City Walking Tour — three to four hours through the streets that most day tours drive past. A seventeenth-century water reservoir, the Castle of Good Hope, the Grand Parade, Company's Garden, St. George's Cathedral, the Slave Lodge, Greenmarket Square. The Bo-Kaap at the end of the route, on foot, the way it's supposed to be walked.

Feliz tells the stories in English or Spanish — a real one for Spanish-speaking travellers looking for depth rather than a checklist.

He doesn't take you into museums — he takes you to the buildings where the history actually happened.

The tour starts at 10am from wherever you're staying and ends at 1pm at the Waterfront. No fitness required, just good walking shoes.

Some days at Cape Point you can't see the point 🌊

The mist rolls in low from False Bay, sits under the cliffs, and if you're standing at the top, you're above it — the mountains of Cape Hangklip visible across the sea of cloud, the horizon a straight white line.

Neil Ferguson took this group out on a Peninsula day last week. Boulders in the morning while the light was still coming through. Chapman's Peak drive after. Hout Bay harbour with the sun behind the mist. Then Cape Point in the afternoon, and the cloud sitting below them like something arranged.

You can plan a route. You can't plan for this.

The vineyards look different from the back of a horse 🐴

Rhebokskloof estate sits at the head of a Paarl valley, the Du Toit's Kloof mountains behind it. From a saddle, the rows of vines run past you the way they were meant to be seen — slow, at eye level, with the whole valley opening as the trail descends.

We pair the ride with a tasting at the estate afterward. Horses first, w**e after.

Rides are two hours or less, gentle-paced, guides alongside. No riding experience needed. The estate handles the horses; we handle the transport and the day.

Some experiences take a bit of stretching to organise. This is one worth stretching for.

The Cape Peninsula ends where the continent runs out of land 🌊

There's a wooden sign at the Cape of Good Hope — the exact latitude and longitude burnt into it, 34°21'25" South, 18°28'26" East. A photo everyone wants. A moment that lands harder than it sounds like it should.

Donovan Shaw drove this family through the second day of their Cape adventure. Hout Bay first, out on a Circe Launches boat to Duiker Island and the seal colony. Then along Chapman's Peak drive, into the reserve, and out to the point itself.

South from here it's open ocean all the way. That's part of what the moment is.

The Big Five, and home for dinner 🦁
