Both of Gerard’s tours, the shark-cage dive and the whale watching in Gansbaai, were cancelled because of the weather. He thought he’d miss them entirely.

Monique, our service coordinator, stepped in. In his words: “Monique stepped in, rebooked both with new operators, and rearranged schedules so I could do both in one day without compromising the experience.”

Tyrone drove the day. Gerard called him “safe, efficient, and warm”, and said he “even added a surprise detour to see penguins at Stony Point!”

You can see the whole whale from the rail.

That’s a southern right whale in clear green water, close enough to the boat that you can follow its tail down as it turns. Everyone on deck is doing the same thing: leaning over, pointing, and forgetting to lift their phone.

Whale season is winding down for the year. If a boat trip is on your list, tell us your dates and we’ll see what fits.

Babylonstoren sits at the foot of the Simonsberg, in the Franschhoek valley. It's one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms in the w**elands, and the garden is the reason to go. You can walk for hours past the different plants and vegetables they grow. The clivias are also a draw when they're in bloom.

For lunch there are a few options: a picnic in the garden, The Old Bakery, the Greenhouse or Babel.

We can make Babylonstoren part of your w**elands tour, or you can spend the whole day there with a cellar tour and a w**e tasting. You can even stay overnight. Spring is a good time to see it.

Three children, a full day in a new city, and a guide who stayed patient through all of it.

The Mother City Explorer is the day where you see the shape of Cape Town in a single go.

Darryl Bird ran this one recently. Table Mountain in the morning while the cloud was clear. The city bowl below, Bo-Kaap on foot with the light on the painted walls, the harbour and the V&A to close.

Darryl's been guiding this route for years. He reads the traffic, the wind on Signal Hill, the cable car queues, the light. What guests get is a day that already made a hundred small decisions before they noticed.

“After looking at the website, I still had questions and recieved immediate and direct help via Whatsapp from Anneen. She gave me all the details I needed and organised both my day tours with Daryl.

I had very specific photos that I wanted to take; Daryl rose to the challenge and drove me to all the best spots in Cape Point and along the coast all the way to Gansbaai!
