Most guests arrive excited to see Africa’s wildlife.

They leave talking about the guide.

The person who spotted the lion before anyone else, explained the tracks in the sand, shared stories about the places they visited, and somehow always seemed to be one step ahead of the adventure.

That’s what makes a great guide. They’re not just there to lead the journey. They’re part of what makes it unforgettable.

Two tyre punctures in one day... or so we thought. 😅

Luckily, only one belonged to the safari vehicle. The second? A much smaller customer who decided his car also needed a roadside repair. 🚙

Safe to say our team can handle punctures of every size.

Cheetahs aren’t usually known for getting their paws wet.

That’s what made this sighting in Hwange National Park so special.

Captured near Nantwich, this cheetah didn’t hesitate to leap into the water in pursuit of a meal, creating a wildlife encounter that few people ever get to witness.

Before the wildlife sightings, the border crossings, and the unforgettable moments, every safari begins with a guide bringing people together.

For Ntando, the first day of a tour is all about preparation, welcoming new faces, and setting the tone for the adventure ahead. From the airport arrival to the first dinner as a group, it's the start of a journey that often turns strangers into travelling companions.

Follow along as Ntando shares what a typical first day on tour looks like from a guide's perspective.

There is more to guiding than driving from one sighting to the next.

A good safari guide notices the small things: a track in the sand, a sudden bird call, a change in animal behaviour, or the quiet signs that something has moved through the area.

They help guests slow down, look closer, and understand the bush in a way they would not experience on their own.

You come for the lion cub, but you leave with a fact you did not know before. 🦁

While watching this youngster, guide Nkossie shared a fascinating insight about the tapetum lucidum, the reflective layer in a lion’s eye that helps it see in low light and gives that familiar glow after dark.

It is these little pieces of knowledge, shared at just the right moment, that make a sighting even more memorable.

Some of the best moments on safari are the quiet ones.

The engine is off, everyone is watching, and all you can hear is the bush around you. In those moments, guides are often reading tracks, listening for calls, and piecing together the story unfolding ahead.

Safari is not only about the wildlife you see. It is about being immersed in an environment where every sound, movement, and detail matters.

Day 16 on the road with Nathan Fitzgerald and our Great Trans Africa Safari guests 🌍

After nearly two weeks travelling through Namibia, the journey continues with incredible wildlife sightings, wide open landscapes, and the kind of unexpected moments that make overland safaris so rewarding. From elephant encounters in the wild to quiet birding moments and unforgettable game viewing, Nathan has been capturing a few behind-the-scenes snapshots of life on safari as the group makes their way across Southern Africa.

Somewhere between dusty roads, sunrise departures, and shared sightings in the bush, strangers slowly become travel companions. We cannot wait to see what the next stretch of the adventure brings.

Not every roadblock is a bad one. 🦁

Captured by one of our guides during a game drive, this lion parked himself right in front of the vehicle and roared nonstop, giving everyone a front-row seat to one very loud bushveld moment.

One way to make sure everyone is awake on the game drive.
